Robert –
I bought this as a backup / future replacement for my beloved WJ Confluence, which is no longer being made
sold. The designs are nearly identical, with some interesting differences. First off, the material is beefy by comparison – ripstop nylon that is treated for water repellence. That makes the Gear Trap feel a shade heavier than the WJC, but you don’t notice when you wear it because it has the same strap system that distributes the load so nicely. This material feels a little stiffer at first but this will likely fade as it breaks in. The two front compartments are both zippered, like the old school WJC. The fly patch is in the smaller front pocket rather than the larger one on the Gear Trap but other than that they are very similar. The rear pockets likewise have a similar distribution, size, and features. The addition of a D-ring to the top of the back of the pack is clutch, as it gives you a really solid mounting place for a net magnet or retractor. Overall this is a great option if you’re looking for a pack that offers features nearly identical to the classic WJC.
